Scaring off seagulls with an eagle kite
One minute, it's your food. The next minute, it's theirs.
Shop staff
"They're absolutely evil. They come from nowhere. They're gliding over your shoulder and they snatch it out of your fingers. And before you know it, you've lost it."
Passer-by 1
"Very annoyed. That's all I've got to say."
But the challenge is what to do about gulls who are desperate to feast on your chips.
In North Yorkshire, this is Whitby's answer to the problem. But what about East Yorkshire? Could this be the solution for Bridlington?
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"Is this better than dressing up in a suit like in Whitby?"
Liam Dealtry, Former Bridlington Mayor
"Much better than dressing up in a suit in Whitby."
Yes. Former Bridlington Mayor Liam Dealtry's up for the challenge.
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"Will it work?"
And to help him – a bird-scaring kite.
"They'll do it on our caravan. I'm sick of cleaning up after them."
Liam Dealtry, Former Bridlington Mayor
"They get everywhere."
Liam Dealtry, Former Bridlington Mayor
"It's fun, and the seagulls do look like they're a bit wary of it."
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"Do you think you could put a few of these up around Brid?"
Liam Dealtry, Former Bridlington Mayor
"I'd like to think we could."
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"Is this going to work?"
Shop staff
"Yeah, I absolutely think it will work. I think that's a great deterrent."
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"Do you really?"
But not everyone agrees.
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"Will it work?"
Passer-by 3
"No, I think the seagulls will just attack it."
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"You think they're that naughty?"
Passer-by 3
"Yeah, they are. Yeah."
Crispin Rolfe, BBC reporter
"So, there are other ways to keep the seagulls off. Some people recommend an umbrella when you're eating your food. The only problem is at the seaside, it's a little bit windy."
And anyway, there is a much simpler solution.
Liam Dealtry, Former Bridlington Mayor
"We have this problem every year with the seagulls and it's education, education, education. If you feed the seagulls, they know they've got a food source that they can use all the time. We want you to come to Brid or any seaside resort to enjoy yourself. Just don't feed the gulls."
Although sometimes that's easier said than done, which is why Bridlington needs to stay on its toes.
